High purity vanadium metal superalloy

Pure metal vanadium is generally obtained by reducing vanadium pentoxide with potassium under high pressure. Most vanadium is a byproduct of processing other minerals. In industry, pure vanadium can also be produced by reducing vanadium pentoxide with aluminum and coke.

Coke reduction of vanadium pentoxide to produce pure vanadium is to mix V2O5 powder with high purity toner, add 10% camphor ether solution or alcohol, and put it into a vacuum carbon furnace or induction furnace. After the vacuum pressure in the furnace reaches 6.66 × 10-1Pa, the temperature is raised to 1573K, and the temperature is maintained for 2 hours. The reaction product breaks down after cooling. According to the composition of the first reduction product, an appropriate amount of vanadium carbide or vanadium oxide is further added for secondary reduction. The vacuum pressure in the secondary reduction furnace was 2.66 × 10-2 Pa, and the temperature was controlled at 2023 K in 1973 and maintained for some time. The composition (mass fraction m/%) of vanadium metal obtained by vacuum carbon reduction method is: vanadium 99.5, oxygen 0.05, nitrogen 0.01 and carbon 0.1. The vanadium yield can reach 98% to 99%.

Thermite reduction method is to react vanadium pentoxide with pure aluminum in a reaction bomb to produce vanadium aluminum alloy. The vanadium alloy was dealuminized at 2063K under a vacuum to obtain 94% crude metal vanadium and 97% vanadium.

In the metallurgical industry, it is an additive to alloy steel, and is also used in the manufacture of refractory materials and special glass, integrated circuits, antennas, etc.
